Principles In Acting

“The actor must know that since he, himself, is the instrument, he must play on it to serve the character with the same effortless dexterity with which the violinist makes music on his. Just because he doesn’t look like a violin is no reason to assume his techniques should be thought of as less difficult.” ~ Uta Hagen

Appropriate for seasoned actors as well as those new to the craft, this 48-week course will focus on developing a method of work and common language through the practice of essential core exercises and the application of those methods to scene work, with the goal of unlocking the imagination and creating bold, actionable choices.

The first session (14 weeks) will lay the foundation for the rest of the course by introducing basic object exercises and crafting of circumstances. The second session (14 weeks) expands this work by engaging in partner object exercises, creating competing objectives and circumstances to explore the essence of conflict. The final session (18 weeks) will be an application of this work to scripted scenes. The class will culminate in a scene night for invited audience. There will also be two special sessions focusing on script and character analysis.

Classes will be held on Monday nights from 6 pm – 9 pm in The Blackbox at the IF Theatre, 719 St. Clair St., unless otherwise noted. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Session 1 (April 13, 2026 – July 20, 2026; no class on Memorial Day)
  • Session 2 (September 14, 2026 – December 14, 2026)
  • Script Analysis – January 4, 2027
  • Character Analysis – January 11, 2027
  • Session 3 (January 4, 2027 – May 17, 2027; includes script/character analysis and final scene presentations)

Because of the cumulative nature of the class, one session is pre-requisite for the next. Regular attendance is expected. Participants in Eric’s Core, Applied Core, or Scene Work courses may join starting with Session 2, space permitting.

Here’s what former students had to say:

What a great experience! As a newbie, I couldn’t ask for a more supportive environment. Thank you Eric Bryant. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for each of us. – Irene H.

Thank you for a wonderful experience, Eric Bryant! And thanks to all my fellow classmates for sharing your work over these past 8 weeks. – Molly B.

It was so useful to me to be exposed to playwrights and works that I hadn’t read before. I loved meeting all the new people, and watching how they approached things. You were so kind and so gentle in your comments and suggestions. It was more of a teaching approach… “You might try this” instead of “don’t do that.” – Karen T.

You are a wonderful teacher and I appreciate your infinite patience! A lot of the scenes you selected aren’t anything I would have picked for myself so the challenge was perfect. – Lori H.
